Memo from Congress to Health Insurance Industry: Party On!
From the first day that it became apparent that Obama wanted to expedite his healthcare reform came a loud rebuke from a group of people still sore from their election loss last year. There wasn’t much conversation, just lots of conclusions that this effort to reign in an industry grown out of control on greed was somehow shredding the US Constitution and leading us into commuism. Of course when pressed for logic and reason for the hysteria, I couldn’t find a single person who could provide any answers. Just lots of wild paranoia and speculation, and plenty of repressed racism.
Yesterday a health form bill passed the House of Reps. Not by much, but it passed. In reading the details of all the compromises required for passage, along with an assessment of what it means to us citizens, it becomes clear that this was a big win for the healthcare industry, but a huge loss to the rest of us.
Essentially the new bill (if it makes it past the Senate) will allow insurance companies to charge premiums of up to 23K per year per family with no penalty. Furthermore, it will be a law to purchase insurance thereby ‘insuring’ that insurance companies will get paid. If you default, it will be taken out of your income taxes and paid to the health insurance industry in some way. Either way you will be forced to pay, and the bill included the amount.
There is one small light in that the insurance companies will be forced to abide their contract with those they insure. Presumably they won’t be allowed to drop coverage in an illness, nor will they be allowed to deny coverage over pre-existing conditions. This would be worth the higher premiums if only it were believable. Rest assured they will figure out a loophole to perpetuate their greed and continue their business as usual.
It’s not communism we need to fear, but rather fascism. This healthcare ‘reform’ is nothing more than yet another exit strategy for a poorly managed industry to bail themselves out on taxpayer dollars. If I were an investor, I’d go long on healthcare insurance, pharma, and private hospitals. They collectively just got a huge bonus from us taxpayers, and the only way you’re going to get anything back is to own a piece of them.

On personal news, not much to report. I have my first appointment with Dr. Vpzk in the morning so I’ll have more to report tomorrow evening. I’ve been feeling pretty good so I don’t know how that will play out.
